Fashion says relax
Post on: 2011-11-02 By: admin
Take a chill pill. Lay low. Calm down dude.
You know about the slow food movement, right? Well this is the slow fashion movement. Not in the sense thatit's all local and ethically produced (although that would be a bonus), but in the sense that it's all about quality over quantity, man. I've had this tingling in my loins for a while now; this nagging feeling that something's about to change. And then I saw it, right in front of my nose on the spring/summer 2012 runways. While a heap of designers were falling over themselves to create the biggest, brightest, most psychedelic orgy of prints, a few stoic souls were doing the complete opposite.
I'm calling it Relax, and it's got me giddy with excitement. Although in theory it should be calming me down. It's the 2012 version of the minimalist aesthetic, a mash-up oftailoredworkwear, sportswear, that anally retentiveminimal design-focused vibe. It's all been shoved in a blender, wolfed downand then regurgitated out into a meditation studio where it has become so chilled out it's almost horizontal.
Toget your handle around what I'm wafting on about with this "quality" spill, have agood look at these Mr Lim, Chloe and Celineimages. Every garment is utterly simple, but has a subtle point of design difference. It's like carrying a subtly classy Birkin over a loudly monogrammed Louis Vuitton tote. The Birkin comes out better in the long run,and besides, it's worthmore. Or thequiet and mousy Upper East Side New Yorkgirl versus the blinged-up hoochie on the rap music video.
You see, as a crazy fashion lover who basically eats stilettos for breakfast (just kidding - though it could get more expensive than caviar on toast) everything on offercan get a little overwhelming at times. And what about you? You don't have the luxury of spending allyour waking hours with your nose in fashion collections, so itmustget even more crazy for you, huh? "Freakin' shearling is in now buy buy buy""Red is the must-have colour go geddit now!" "If you don't have lime green nails right now you'll go to bad fashion hell!" Geez. So this is a look I welcome with open arms, just perfect for those days when everything is feeling a little hectic. Or you have a hangover and want to feel like you're wearing pyjamas all day at work.
See how serene these models look? Relax style clothing will have that effect on you. Oh sheet. They're all wearing pants. I swear it wasn't supposed to be like that - skirts are allowed too, and dresses. But back to the rant, here are my versions:
Poo pantsfeel justlike pyjama pants.
It's difficult to stay calm.
And one for the fraidy-cats. Blissfully simple and utterly safe with lovely bamboo/silk pants and a slouch jumper. And the most stylish accessory of all - aplaster on my right finger. See I am a mortal. I bleeeed.
I urge you to give this relaxed look a whirl, it's very refreshing! When shopping (or rummaging through your wardrobe) look for simple cuts and silhouettes in lovely fabrics like silk, linen and cotton, fine jersey knit and super soft synthetics. The clothing shouldn't cling or hang off you, but drape in a nice slouchy way. The key with this look is to be comfortable.
Stella McCartney resort, and Chloe dress from netaporter.
Marcs shirt, $140, and Alexander Wang jumper from Netaporter and Workshop.
Theory pants, $375 from Revolve, and Alexander Wang suede top from Netaporter.
Topshop navy top, and Alexander Wang gown.
Topshop Unique dress, and Topshop loafers.
Your accessory selection should be understated and reserved, but by no means small - we're talking about design focus here peoples. Same goes with shoes; I don't care whether you wear heels or flats, just keep them simple but elegant. They can still be freaking cool, like these Camilla Skovgaard honeys down below. I love the majestic mood of simplebut statementjewellery.Aren't you just widdling toteam those heels and that collar with the perfect flappy blacktrouser and a cream silk blouse? I am. Hell, I'm doing it now. In my dreams.
Camilla Skovgaard heels from Netaporter and Off the Runway, and David Lawrence collar, $59.
David Lawrence cuff $49, and Topshop necklace.
Ezibuy sandals, and Marcs sunnies.
Other than being hideous and sporting and equally hideous name, those poo pants make your legs looks super short, exactly what you were trying to avoid in your last blog. Where's the consistency?
From a very 'un'fashioneesta perspective, I really like the job you did in this blog of applying runway fashion to real life.Good stuff.
Your blog makes me happy, as does this relaxed trend. Perfect for a Friday! :)
I really want to rock that shorts look around the office this summer!I've sorted the colourful platform shoes and shorts just need the floaty top...I'm loving the harem pant look too - where do you find ones that don't also look like pj pants and are in a nice fabric?!
Love it! living in a small rural town is hard to see people with good fashion sense and this blog up dates me all the time with what is on fashion now.
Gracias Bronwyn :) you are awesome.
'man. I've had this tingling in my loins for a while now; this nagging feeling that something's about to change.' Not sure, but I think it's called puberty.
'crazylover who basically eats stilettos for breakfast (just kidding - Thanks for that. Go with the fetish, just please it be after breakfast.
'You see, as a crazy fashion lover who' - 'is the must-have.' Nah, you just like buying new clothes, and the designers just so love you.
Dearest Bronwyn...I have to agree with Amy #1, those pants are just so, so, sooooo wrong !!:-(
OMG!I bought that Damn You Alexis dress you featured recently (the hourglass blog) and it is unequivocally, indisputably, absolutely THE. BEST. DRESS. EVER.
AND I bought it online from Oz, it was totally easy, it arrived in 4 days and it fits perfectly - how impossible is that?
This blog of yours is really fun to read, and just like you I am really excited about a new splash of minimalism in fashion!!
Sadly this style just Does.Not.Work. for those of us with larger legs. I do like the look of drapey pants, but they look hideous on me.
